By the time Martin Rogier and Lautaro de Cap decided to form Austria, the idea for what the band would sound like, was all ready in their heads.

The Rosario, Argentina natives, Rougier (piano, vocals) and Gonzalez de Cap (guitar and vocals) recognized the musical potential as a creative duo and quickly wrote songs “Fabula” and “Sobre el Sur.”

Happy that the project was moving forward, but not satisfied with the recordings, Rougier and Gonzalez de Cap refined their sound until they were confident that they had something to present to the world. When the two felt they had enough quality material, the two formed Austria in 2006. The group moniker is named after the country, based on the duo’s view that the homeland of Mozart and Freud has an innocence and neatness akin to Lautaro and Martin’s newly created sound. After several line-up changes, they finally settled on Franco Mascotti (guitar and lap steel, and also producer of their first album), Emanuel Hernández (acoustic guitar), Cristian Villafañe (bass) and Emiliana Arias (drums).

Armed with a complete album in 2007, the band circulated the recordings to various people in the industry, which led to an invitation by Nacional Records to perform at the Latin Alternative Music Conference (LAMC) in New York City. There, the band played a handful of impressive shows, which led to some brief airplay on Nic Harcourt’s influential radio show, KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic. While Austria was offered a record deal by Nacional, they ultimately turned it down; however, while showcasing in Los Angeles, writer/producer Cisco DeLuna and artist Steve Reynolds caught one of their shows that led to their publishing and label deals. Returning to Rosario (they had a limited visa), the band entered a tournament and won, which led to playing the Quilmes Rock Festival, which is Argentina’s biggest annual rock show; Austria got its first taste of performing for thousands of people. From there, Austria steadily has become a fixture on the Rosario scene and continues to play more and more throughout the country.

Nada is out now.
